The History of The Village on Summer
The previously named Summer Centre has been a shopping destination for some locals for more than thirty years. Ashcroft’s IGA supermarket was the drawcard for several years allowing other shops to benefit from IGA’s dedicated shoppers. With the previous owners in receivership, the Summer Centre looked and felt a bit tired and unloved until it was purchased in February 2018. At the time it was underutilised by local and visiting shoppers but a handful of local business operators with unique, high-quality, bespoke offerings such as the Sugarmill and Choox, gave people a reason to return. When Dan Murphy’s opened its doors, and an interim refurbishment took place within the Centre, locals and visitors to Orange began to increase their frequency of visits.
Parking was definitely another huge drawcard with so many other shopping centres and supermarkets lacking adequate and convenient parking. Now, the community welcomes a new chapter in the life of this precinct and we can’t wait to see and enjoy the final result!
What’s in Store
The Village on Summer Street introduce a new, fresh shopping experience. With retail shops, convenience stores, alfresco dining and a light, airy feel, it has extended the Orange CBD and connected nearby signature bespoke businesses such as The Sonic, Birdie, Spilt Milk and providing confidence to new high-end, bespoke local businesses opening in Orange. Bringing a Melbourne laneway vibe with a hint of Italian piazzas, and a little bit of Double Bay, this precinct fits perfectly with Orange’s new residents working in the health, agricultural and education industries and tourists enjoying the nearby Airbnb and boutique hotel accommodation, cellar doors and natural attractions.
